Hopeful students from The Whitehaven Academy Post 16 Centre will be traveling to Japan next month.
The academy have been approached by the Sasakawa Foundation who have offered 12 students and 3 teachers a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to experience a very different culture. The students have been offered this trip free of charge. Whilst in Osaka, Japan, the 12 students will be living with host families for four nights. The students will also be staying in other places, their personal highlight being the Japanese Inn on Miyajima.
Frank Anderson, Head Of Post 16 said "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for all these students. Students will experience a different culture visiting temples, technology parks, Hiroshma and meeting a survivor of the atomic bomb. Students and staff are extremely excited about the opportunity. It is a very generous offer from the Sasakawa Foundation and we appreciate their involvement."
The students will be departing from the academy on 22nd October 2015 and arriving back late on 31st October 2015. The students are travelling to Heathrow Airport by coach. This is what the team are aiming to raise money for. Despite all of the costs being covered, the students are having to raise their own money to get to and from Heathrow Airport. The students have estimated a target of £2000 and they are currently doing many different fundraising tasks in order to achieve this target. The team have already completed a bag pack at Morrisons in Whitehaven, where they raised over £900! In order to raise the rest of their money, the team have now started selling raffle tickets, in which they are asking local businesses to donate prizes. As well as this, the team have also been approaching local businesses in order to ask for sponsorship in order to reach their target. (If you are interested in helping them, a contact is fanderson@whitehavenacademy.org.uk).
The students are extremely excited in order to experience their once in a lifetime opportunity; all they need is your help! Thank you to everybody supporting the team already, this trip would not be possible without all of your kind donations.
