On Friday May 8th hundreds are set to pack out the village of Gosforth as the celebrations begin for Victory In Europe.
Organisers are planning a spectacular community day with live entertainment, processions, Solway Aviation Museum displays, vast array of emergency services, stalls and fun.
The event will kick off with a procession of local groups, bands, veterans and members of the public from Bradbury House which will lead everyone through the village up to the main event site where ready waiting for them will be a day full of celebrations and fun. Miss Cindy Hoten will open up the main stage after the procession which is starting at 11am and the event will remain open until around 4pm.
When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets to celebrate peace, mourn their loved – ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II.
The 75th anniversary will provide everyone with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life.
Rachel Unsworth one of the event organisers commented "Gosforth VE day celebration and Picnic in The Park is turning out to be much bigger than first planned with most local groups taking part. I'm really pleased with the local response and hope that the day brings the local community together as people will see what the community has to offer.”
